Every facet of daily life has been touched by the coronavirus and the mental health of young adults has been especially affected. According to a survey conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, young adults are among one of the groups being disproportionately impacted by mental health issues. In this study, it was found that 31% of their 5,412 participants aged 18-24 were experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression, and 26.3% had a trauma or stress-related disorder.
Even before the pandemic, mental health issues with young adults had been a growing area of concern. Many sources reported that the prevalence of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and suicidal tendencies have been on the rise in the last decade. Combine this with the isolation and anxiety as a result of coronavirus and this has created an environment of worsening depression and anxiety that was already present.
Researchers believe that the significant changes to young adults’ lives are to blame. Amid the pandemic, these individuals are trying to navigate life transitions. Some are just starting college while others are trying to find jobs, all without being able to experience normal social activities. This is all happening during a recession as well which is creating many hardships for this group.
Young adults are also spending more time on screens and less time interacting with others. Remote learning and constant exposure to social media can be a continuous reminder of the coronavirus. Young adults are often finding themselves frequently watching, reading, or talking about the virus which has been linked to negative mental health symptoms.
Other factors that are being found to impact the mental health of young adults are:
- More time being spent inside
- Reduction in exercise routines
- Change in sleep patterns due to lack of daily structure
- Less experience dealing with a public health crisis
- Missing certain developmental milestones
For those young adults who find themselves struggling with mental health issues, there is a wide range of options for help during this time. There are hotlines and crisis centers for individuals with severe and immediate needs. If the individual can cope on their own, limiting negative news and social media can help as well as staying connected with supportive friends and family regularly. For others who are suffering from mental health symptoms, there is therapy. Telehealth services are widely available for those who cannot access local treatment.
